Bukittinggi Rafflesia West Sumatra
West Sumatra, the land of the Minangkabau is a ravishing equatorial region with cool enchanting highlands, rising from dense, luxuriant jungles. The province is 42 297 square km. It has a population of approximately 4 203 000 people of which 95% consists of the Minangkabau ethnic group. The remaining 5% is of mixed origin.
West Sumatra is the homeland of the Minangkabau people with their unique matrilineal society, which passes property and wealth down along the maternal line. A unique system which has been maintained up to this very day, and is found nowhere else in Indonesia.
West Sumatra has a tropical climate. Temperatures range from 26 to 29 degrees C along the coast, and can be as low as 20 degrees lower in the mountain areas, so bring some warm gear if you plan to hike to the mountains. West Sumatra has heavier rainfal than the rest of the island, an average of 310,6cms annually.
Bukittinggi
Bukittinggi is the second largest town in the province and the centre of tourism, about 92kms from Padang or two hours drive from Tabing Airport. The road to Bukittinggi passes between two volcanoes: Mount Merapi and Mount Singgaland. The town is located at 930 metre above sea level, so it has a cooler climate.
The Minang Big Houses which can be seen in the countryside around Bukittinggi have distinctive roofs with a print at each end. The centre of Bukittinggi is the Jam Gadang built by the dutchman Bookmaker in 1827. The clock tower serves as an elegant landmark for Bukittinggi's centre. Minangkabau design is evident in the buffalo horn design on the top of the clock.
The Sianok Canyon on the west side of the town is easily accessible for hikes and picnics. The canyon walls rise 100 to 200 metres above a small river which winds through the green floor of the canyon. One of the most pleasant aspects of the canyon are the two volcanoes, Merapi and Singgaland, brooding in the distance.

Harau Valley Trek
Harau Valley is a hidden gem in West Sumatra, and a place that is still slowly being discovered. The beautiful valley is vast, and there is so much to explore, from waterfalls to rafting down the river. You will enjoy the nature and peacefulness of this scenic place.
Sianok Canyon Walk

Sianok Canyon is one of the best things about Bukittinggi and a focal point of the town. Looking at the canyon from the lookout points makes you want to walk down in the canyon and explore the oldest natural feature. Apart from watching buffalos swim, you can also walk all the way to Kota Gadang, which is the small village where they make silver, including jewelery, its worth checking out!

SIBERUT ISLAND ADVENTURE TOUR
This is one of the most popular tours on offer. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity to walk through primitive jungle, and to spend time with the native tribes on this primitive island.
The Mentawai tribes here still live in a simple way, having hardly any contact with the modern world. They eat the vegetation and animals around them using traditional methods of cooking over a fire and sleep in simple huts with no electricity. All of the traditions are still upheld such as tatooing many parts of the body and shaping the teeth 'fang' style. This is something not to be missed!!
Lake Maninjau is a gorgeous blue lake close to Bukittinggi, and well worth a visit.
Anyone who has done this tour has loved it, and when you do it, you will share the same opinion I'm sure! Its a mix of culture as well as nature with a nice walk into the jungle where its quiet, spending some time up close to nature.
The highlight of this trek is the night at Ana's homestay. Its a simple dwelling in the jungle, that is economical and eco-friendly, made only from wood. A fresh water stream in the mandi (bathroom) area is the perfect way to get clean! There is no electricity so dont forget your torch!
You are well looked after by the host family who cook you a delicious local meal, well deserved after a days trek! Grab a Bintang beer and lye in a hammock whilst watching the sun set over beautiful lake Maninjau and the surrounding jungle. Nothing could be more peaceful and relaxing.
In the evening, its a great time to chill out and enjoy your own company, or get to know your fellow trekkers by playing some good old fashioned cards or board games!
The trek through the small villages on the way down to Lake Maninjau the next day is an insight into the locals daily lives, watching them work on their farm, and seeing their daily lives in action. A refreshing swim in the lake is rewarded to you when you finally reach Lake Maninjau.
